Afternoon PL: Introducing JTAN’s Haiku Contest 2026

Date: 5:00pm – 5:45pm, Wednesday 4th February 2026

JTAN is pleased to announce the commencement of a new competition for students. In 2026, JTAN will hold a Haiku Contest. There will be Stage 5 (Years 9 & 10) and Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12).

In the Afternoon Professional Learning Session for teachers held online, Motoko Christensen will introduce what Haikus are, their history, significance and their usage in promoting linguistic and artistic expression.

Contest:
Students will create an original haiku in Japanese. Your haiku can be serious, funny, reflective, or artistic – it’s up to you!

Mode:

  • Written: A haiku poem presented on an A4 page (with optional illustration or design).
  • Digital: A short reel of up to 30 seconds, combining the haiku with sound and visuals to match the poem. (Please submit as a zip file, dropbox link or Google Drive link)

 

Submission Checklist

  • Haiku is in Japanese
    (using Japanese appropriate to the student’s level)
  • Follows 5-7-5 syllable pattern
  • Seasonal or nature-based theme
  • Original work (no AI or copied)
