Any practising teacher of Japanese in NSW, as well as pre-service university students who are studying to become Japanese teachers, are eligible to request JTAN membership.

Participation in JTAN events requires current membership or payment of non-member fees (typically twice the normal workshop cost). Membership is $80 for individual teachers and $40 for preservice teachers. We are pleased to offer tiered rates in 2020 for schools with multiple teachers.

  • TWO teacher membership $140
  • THREE teacher membership $180
  • FOUR teacher membership $220

Note that to take advantage of multiple-teacher membership it must be purchased in one transaction, you cannot add another teacher later or remove/change teachers. As per our Membership Rules, membership is attached to the member not the school – membership cannot be transferred to another teacher.

If you have more than 4 Japanese teachers, please contact enquire@jtan.org.au for an individual invoice.

JTAN is an association of Japanese teachers working to improve Japanese language education in NSW and Australia. Members are provided professional development opportunities through workshops and exclusive resources. JTAN is a place to have your voice heard, be supported and meet colleagues from other schools.

  • New Extension support resources
  • Ability to participate in approx. 18 events across the year including both student and teacher workshops. In 2020 our schedule includes:

    • Winter Holiday HSC workshops for Beginners, Continuers, Extension
    • Programming, assessment, and reporting workshops Stages 3-6
    • Specialised workshops for pre-service and early-career teachers
    • Culture Day excursion for students

  • Online and face to face networking opportunities via our new website launching in 2020 – teachers will be able to opt-in to network area lists to help find local colleagues and create stronger local learning communities.
  • Representation for Japanese teachers at state and federal level with educational reviews, reforms and syllabus consultations.
  • Interstate and national connections – we work with Japanese Language Teacher Associations across Australia – our members can attend PL across Australia for the same cost as a local member in that state.
  • Ability to purchase our Trial HSC and Preliminary exams, as well as our extensive back catalogue. These exams are only available to members.

JTAN is happy to discuss the possibility of hosting events in non-metropolitan areas. If you have a workshop or topic you would like us to present and a suitable venue available, please get in touch at enquire@jtan.org.au for further discussions. We are also able to offer online courses and webinar content to better cater for our regional members.

JTAN is a not for profit organisation run by a small committee of 10 teachers who work full-time in addition to their volunteer roles with JTAN. We do not employ administrative staff aside from the essential legal, accounting and website support personnel needed to operate.

Exam sales, membership and event fees help JTAN to cover costs such as website hosting, administration, accounting, legal, venue hire, catering, voice acting, printing costs, credit card and banking fees and surcharges, development of teaching support materials and so on.

JTAN also acknowledges the contributions our members make when giving up their time to assist at student workshops (e.g. speaking days) and professional development events (e.g. Winter Holiday Workshops) through a small honorarium payment.

Please check that the email address you have registered with is accurate, as typing errors will prevent news items from reaching your inbox. If you still do not receive the mail-outs, please contact news@jtan.org.au.

JTAN members are always welcome to join the committee and are required to demonstrate:

  • Sound knowledge of the Japanese curriculum in NSW
  • Interest in curriculum and/or assessment
  • Willingness to contribute to the network by promoting and collaborating
  • Responsiveness to the needs of JTAN
  • Regular participation in committee work via phone, email and physical meetings
  • Attendance at JTAN events.

Committee members are elected at the JTAN AGM. If you would like to be considered for a position, please register closer to the AGM date. Further details of committee elections can be found here

Once your JTAN membership has been approved, you will be able to purchase exams and event tickets through the “shop” tab on our website.

You can pay for membership, exams and events using bank transfer or credit card (PayPal). If your school is paying by bank transfer (including EDConnect) please note that you must advise JTAN of the Purchase Order number, and you cannot change your payment method as JTAN will invoice EDConnect directly if payment is not received promptly.

Purchase using the “invoice” option and advise JTAN by email that the invoice will be paid by EDConnect, along with the purchase order number. JTAN will then manually update and reissue the invoice to include the purchase order number.

After purchasing events/resources using the “invoice” payment type, please email enquire@jtan.org.au with your JTAN invoice number and the purchase order number required. JTAN will then manually update and reissue the invoice to include the purchase order number. The invoice will be updated on the website.

Please see JTAN’s refund policy in our Terms and Conditions. Some events have specific additional terms and conditions. Please read the terms and conditions carefully when purchasing events, exams and resources.

Yes, multiple purchases are available through the JTAN website. Use the “add to cart” button for each item and complete the checkout process once you have added all the items you would like to purchase.

Non-member teachers of JTAN are able to access some events at different pricing schemes. Note that member access will be prioritised should events reach capacity. Most events are open to pre-service teacher members (university students studying to become Japanese teachers) with some exceptions.

Members are encouraged to participate by presenting or co-presenting on various topics related to curriculum or assessment. JTAN is always seeking innovative ideas from practising teachers. By sharing your expertise, you will be able to build a stronger network and develop the teaching of Japanese across the state. Please send us an email with your ideas! (link)

Please see JTAN’s refund policy on the Terms and Conditions page.

In events where teachers interact with students, your Working With Children Check number and Date of Birth allow JTAN to meet the legal requirement of ensuring the safety of young people at our events. If you do not provide your DOB and WWCC number, we will not be able to accept your registration (or your students’) for these events.

When Speaking Days are held face-to-face, students cannot attend a JTAN speaking day without a JTAN-member teacher. This is to ensure adequate duty of care is provided for students during the event. When Speaking Days are held online, some limited capacity may be made available for students to attend without a teacher as this is not considered an excursion.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for the event to appear in your eTAMS account. If you are accredited at provisional or conditional, then you will not be able to receive hours gained prior to achieving proficient teacher status. Please see NESA’s website for further information.

Yes, as long as you have paid for the event and not requested a refund.

JTAN does not provide certificates. For teachers accredited at proficient, proof of attendance can be accessed via eTAMS. If you are provisionally or conditionally accredited and require further proof of attendance, please email JTAN with your request, we are happy to email your school to confirm your attendance if required.

Whilst we make every effort to organise venues with sufficient capacity, occasionally demand for a workshop may exceed the capacity that a venue can provide. In this case we may need to close registrations earlier than advertised. If a workshop reaches capacity, a waiting list will be created and we will advise you if vacancies become available. For some workshops, additional days/sessions may be created if there is sufficient demand.

Yes, you can attend part of a workshop. However, if it is a NESA registered workshop you will not be able to obtain the NESA registered hours if you arrive late or leave early. These conditions are stipulated by NESA, not JTAN. Please note that we do not provide refunds for partial attendance.

You will require:

  • An internet connection that can support video streaming to ensure full access to resources and content
  • a microphone (a headset with a microphone is recommended)
  • a camera (built-in/ external) is required for NESA registered events as we must certify you were present and engaged in the full workshop.

While JTAN understands that internet connectivity issues can occur, we cannot take responsibility for this and it is not a reason for a refund.

Hover over your name and then select “My Events” from the menu. You will then be able to access your event history and review ticket details, invoices and receipts

Please click on “lost your password” on the login screen and use the email address you used to register to reset your password

If you tried to log in with your credentials from the old site the security measures on the new site will block your account temporarily. This block will reset after a short period of time so try again in an hour or email us and we will reset it if we are available.

Please don’t use any previous login details (username or password) as this is an entirely new site
