JTAN 20th Anniversary AGM, Mini-Conference & Celebratory Dinner

Come join us in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Japanese Teachers Association of NSW (JTAN). JTAN was formed between the end of 2004 to mid 2005. JTAN was formed as a need to support Japanese teachers in all sectors across NSW.

The annual JTAN AGM and Mini-Conference will be held on Saturday 18th October. Participation in the AGM is free for financial members of JTAN.

This year, the JTAN AGM & Mini Conference will be held at International Grammar School, Ultimo.

Registrations will open at 11:45 am for a 12:00 pm start and the event will conclude at approximately 4:00pm.

Presenters

  • Robyn Moloney is a writer and educator. She has been both a language teacher and a teacher educator. She has special interest in pedagogy for linguistic diversity, and her writing and research have explored students’ and teachers’ intercultural learning. She works with schools to develop school-wide practice which recognises all students’ cultural knowledge.  She believes that all the languages of Australian schools are a learning resource capable of raising wellbeing and achievement for all.
  • Angela Hong is currently a Senior Assessment Officer at NESA working on the Stage 6 Curriculum and Assessment Reform who is passionate about engaging educators in quality practices that drive improvement. Prior to this she was Head Teacher Teaching and Learning and Languages at Sydney Technical High School, and Head Teacher Teaching and Learning at Bonnyrigg High School. Angela’s diverse educational experiences and multi-disciplinary background in English, TAS, and Visual Arts has enabled her to develop relevant and effective professional learning for teachers from a range of teaching backgrounds.
  • Kelvin Tran has been a Japanese teacher at North Sydney Girls High School since 2017. He embarked on career as a Japanese language teacher in order to help students see that the language learning journey is achievable. At his school, he has worked on in various teams to renovate school assessment catered for HPGE students, school-wide literacy, student wellbeing and has recently introduced the martial art, kendo, as a mandatory school sport. He spends his free time figuring out how to teach his young son to become bilingual.

There will be NO FEE to participate in the AGM to further support our members.

Interstate participants who are members of their state Japanese Teachers’ Association and pre-service teachers are also welcome to attend – please note this event is IN PERSON ONLY. However, only JTAN current financial members may attend the AGM component of the day. 20th Anniversary Dinner

Please join us after the AGM & Mini-Conference for our celebratory dinner, celebrating 20 years of JTAN.

There are limited spots for this exclusive dinner event. Financial members of JTAN will receive a free beverage (soft drink or beer) and half of their meal covered ($30). Remainder of drinks, members need to pay themselves.

Please note: Dinner payment must be paid by your own personal funds. Schools cannot fund this purchase. 

JTAN Annual General Meeting

All members are invited to attend the JTAN Annual General Meeting. If you are unable to attend the AGM, you may participate in the decision-makings by completing the Proxy form (click here to download).

Committee positions available: Several committee positions will become available at this year’s AGM, as outlined below. We encourage all members to step up and be part of the committee – without members stepping up to become part of the committee we cannot continue to provide the level of professional learning and support we currently do.

JTAN is a voluntary organisation of dedicated teachers, as a result, Committee roles provide needed flexibility and the opportunity to contribute remotely.

Please express your interest in joining the JTAN Committee 2025-26 by completing the relevant nomination form before the AGM (click here to download). You do not need to be Sydney based to join our Committee! If you would like further information about any position please contact enquire@jtan.org.au

Vice President

  • Supports president (training role for future president)
  • Act on behalf of president when required
  • Liaises with university contacts and Japanese community networks
  • Contact and organise presenters and materials
  • Oversees and supports any JTAN sub-committees, e.g. Primary, Exam Committees
  • Attendance at core JTAN events including exam writing and HSC speaking days (Beginners and Continuers)

Secretary

  • Provide committee meeting agenda and minutes in a timely manner & help with the preparations for the AGM (Agenda & Annual Report).
  • Prepare and email JTAN News to members on a regular basis.
  • Liaise with other members of the Committee in preparing the JTAN News.
  • Knowledge of Canva and Mailchimp is desired.

Treasurer

    • Prepare and manage budget and tax affairs. Present itemised accounts of income and outcome statements as and when required by the committee.
    • Pays honorariums and invoices using MYOB. Knowledge of MYOB is desired.
    • Write a financial report for AGM & monthly Committee meetings. Breaking down income and expenses.
    • Issues PAYG for the financial year.
    • Knowledge of Superannuation is desired but not required.
    • Manage JTAN bank accounts and liaise with the accountant.

Workshop Coordinator (2 positions available) 

  • Work with committee to plan events (approx. 15 per year, split across 2 workshop coordinators with additional support from committee, most events now afternoons/evenings, no more than 4 Saturday events per year, including AGM)
  • Liaise with presenters, organise venue hire and catering (face to face) and support presenters and participants as required during events
  • Communicate with workshop participants re: workshop details
  • Manage online events with the platform Zoom, assisting the presenter and taking attendance
  • Manage distribution of workshop handouts (print or digital)
  • Attendance at core JTAN events including exam writing and HSC speaking days (Beginners and Continuers).

Ordinary Committee Member (positions available) 

  • Commitment to supporting the aims of Japanese Teachers’ Association of NSW
  • Assistance with the running of JTAN events/activities as determined by the committee
  • Attendance at core JTAN events including exam writing and HSC speaking days (Beginners and Continuers)

Unless otherwise advised, all JTAN workshops in 2025 will count as “Elective PL” for NESA purposes.

Close to the University of Sydney, Notre Dame, UTS and Glebe Point Road, IGS can also be accessed via public transport. Buses run regularly along nearby Parramatta Road and we are about 10 minutes’ walk from Central Railway Station.
