Steps to Success: Stage 6 2023 – CLOSED FOR REGISTRATION

This face-to-face workshop aims to equip early-career (up to 5 years experience) and pre-service teachers with some of the essential knowledge and skills required to teach the Stage 6 Beginners and Continuers Course. Experienced teachers will lead sessions covering administration requirements, assessment (task ideas, marking), speaking skill development and how to prepare students for HSC-style oral examinations.

Note any teachers with more than 5 years of experience in teaching but have not taught Beginners or Continuers course for a long time will also find this session useful.

9.15 – 10.00 Session 1 – Administration: Administration and Organisation: Making it Manageable

An overview of the administrative requirements for teaching Stage 6 (NESA) and tips for staying organised and planning ahead to minimise stress and maximise learning. 

10.00 – 10.20 Morning Tea

10.20 – 12.20 Session 2 – Effective Assessment: Ideas, Marking & Feedback 

This session will provide ideas and examples of assessment of, as and for learning tasks in line with the new requirements for a wider variety of task types for Stage 6. We will also discuss a variety of effective strategies and formats for scaffolding speaking and writing assessments and providing quality feedback. 

Mini-workshop: corporate marking – how to apply marking criteria consistently

13.00 – 14.00 Session 3: Developing Exam Skills: Preparing Students for HSC Oral Examination

What strategies are effective in developing student competency and confidence for the HSC Oral Examinations? What skills do we need to develop as teachers to ensure our students are well-prepared? 

Mini-workshop: practise conducting Beginners and Continuers HSC-style exams with other participants

14.00 – 14.50 Session 4:    Developing and Maintaining Language Proficiency 

Limited opportunities for practice are a challenge facing both our students and ourselves as teachers in many contexts. How can we develop our students’ proficiency with limited contact hours each week, and also maintain our own amongst the time-consuming administrative tasks that demand our time as teachers?
